I KEPT DOING THE THING. Another fic from this Overwatch AU 'verse with renshai. This one gives some more of Lena's backstory, plus how she actually, y'know, ends up back with new!Overwatch in the first place.

I DID THE THING?? This is the Overwatch AU that I have with renshai for our Saints Row bosses, because we're huge fucking nerds. The 'verse centers on former Overwatch brats Lena McCarroll and Max Eshkibog, daughters of decorated Blackwatch operatives Maddie McCarroll and Lilah Eshkibog. After their moms are reported killed in action, the girls are sent away to a US Marines boot camp and a Canadian military academy, respectively. The Recall happens when they're about 24-25.

Rating: Very soft teen for lots of swearing and abandonment issues

Summary: Lena is trying and failing to get comfortable in New Overwatch (TM), and gets her second visit from a ghost.

The sun is just rising, orange light filling the cracks in the windows of the new Overwatch’s HQ, or more accurately, its hide-out. Likely abandoned since shortly after the Omnic crisis, it’s only marginally worse than the Saints’ base of operations, low-profile and generally low-tech except for the few amenities that Winston has managed to repair or install himself. The old dormitory’s doors don’t lock, and the beds are worse than the granite slab of a mattress she’d had in boot camp. There’s a kitchenette with an unreliable oven and no dishwasher, and the only furniture in the adjacent rec room is Winston’s tire swing and a musty couch with a persistent odor of stale coffee.

Soooo, this is the thing I mentioned last post, the Sappho poem that struck me and reminded me of the Dalish elves and which I have translated and slightly adapted to be actually relevant to the Dalish. Um. I have retained as much of the original as possible, because what really drew me to it initially was the descriptions of nature in it, and mostly have just altered references to deities and things with symbolic meaning.

I have a lot of other thoughts on this, but I will spare you. XD

Open question: can haz grammar?

Okay, this is mostly directed at people who are multilingual and/or involved in online communities that are not in English. Are LOLcats, LOLspeak, et cetera popular in other languages? Whether it is related to cats or not, is there a certain humor or charm or whatever associated with phrasing things in a grammatically incorrect fashion? That is to say, in Spanish, could one say yo tiene un sabor for comedic effect?

What about words spelled so as to be incorrect but still phonetic? I'm actually having trouble thinking about how this would be done in other languages, since English spelling is so bizarre and has so many redundant letter combinations and rule exceptions that it's pretty easy to substitute alternate phonetic renderings for the correct spelling. And what about languages that decline nouns as well as conjugate verbs, or languages like Japanese that are hardly inflected at all?

I've been wondering this for a really long time, and I'm really curious now.

Sidenote: screw you, Firefox spellcheck. "Combinations" is a word.
